Opening disc The Singles sets the tone, establishing a pattern of presenting familiar tracks in a fresh context that’s central to this set’s considerable appeal. Despite having at one point been stored in the damp confines of a barge on the Manchester Ship Canal, the majority of tapes were salvageable, and the songs chosen for inclusion have been newly mastered. Knowing of Lynott’s contributions, the seller was contacted and found to be the custodian of the Lizzy tapes. Nick Sharp, one of the consultants involved in compiling Rock Legends, told RC that the tapes were retrieved when outtakes from Johnny Thunders’ So Alone album appeared on eBay. In the Radio 2 documentary The Poet, The Rocker: The Phil Lynott Story, Lynott’s mother, Philomena, recalled Lizzy collaborator Huey Lewis telling her of a meeting with Bob Dylan. Lizzy’s instantly recognisable sound framed Phil Lynott’s formidable songwriting in a brash, concise hard rock setting, layered with resonant twin guitar and vocal melodies, distinctive within their genre and appealing outside it.
